Flash flooding occurred in and around Ruidoso, New Mexico, after monsoonal thunderstorms produced intense rainfall over wildfire burn scar terrain on June 23. The event resulted in swift water rescues and prompted a Flash Flood Warning from the National Weather Service (NWS).
The storms came in during the late afternoon hours, generating rapid surface runoff over the Salt Burn Scar, an area burned during the 2024 wildfire season. NWS Albuquerque reported rainfall totals of 25 to 50 mm (1 to 2 inches) in less than one hour, with localized amounts potentially higher.
Footage from the area shows streets turning into flood channels, vehicles submerged, and water entering structures in low-lying locations. Emergency responders carried out multiple rescues, including evacuations at a mobile home park and a hotel in the nearby community of Hollywood.
No fatalities or injuries were reported as of the evening (local time) of June 23.
NWS Albuquerque extended a Flood Watch for much of central and eastern New Mexico through at least Wednesday, June 25. The forecast indicates between 25 mm and 50 mm (1–2 inches) of rainfall in affected areas, which can go up to 127 mm (5 inches). The agency warned of “catastrophic burn scar flooding potential” in updated hazard outlooks.
The warning is of concern for burn scar regions where infiltration capacity is severely reduced and surface stability is compromised. These conditions increase the risk of rapid runoff, channel overtopping, and sediment-laden flows even after brief rainfall events.
Local authorities urged residents and visitors to remain alert, monitor weather updates, and register for official emergency alert systems. Further monsoon activity is forecast for the region through the week, with repeated rounds of convection expected.
