The epicenter was located 144.8 km (90 miles) SSW of Severo-Kuril’sk (population 2 422) and 435 km (270.3 miles) SSW of Vilyuchinsk (population 24 204).
2 000 people are estimated to have felt light shaking.
There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
