A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.1 hit the Kuril Islands, Russia at 05:37 UTC on August 24, 2021. The agency is reporting and depth of 38 km (23.6 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.1 at a depth of 30 km (18.6 miles).
The epicenter was located 233 km (138 miles) SSW of Severo-Kurils and 518 km (321 miles) SSW of Vilyuchinsk, Russia.
There are just a few people living within 100 km (62 miles).
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are adobe block and unreinforced brick with mud construction.
