Increased activity at Bezymianny volcano, Russia

An eruption at Bezymianny volcano in Kamchatka, Russia, sent ash up to 4 km (13 123 feet) a.s.l. and triggered seismic activity at 10:20 LT (00:20 UTC) on February 1, 2025. KVERT raised the Aviation Color Code to Orange on January 31, marking the first upgrade in three months since October 4, 2024.

The Aviation Color Code for Bezymianny volcano in Russia was raised back to Orange on January 31, 2025, after three months at Yellow, following increased gas-steam emissions and a high-temperature thermal anomaly.

The Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) reported an ash emission reaching 4 km (13 123 feet) above sea level at 10:20 LT (00:20 UTC) on February 1. Seismic activity has increased and the latest Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) on February 3 warns of continued effusive activity for at least three days.

KVERT cautions that an explosive eruption could send ash plumes up to 15 km (49 200 feet), potentially affecting international and low-altitude flights.

Bezymianny, a 2 882 m (9 455 feet) stratovolcano in the Eastern Kamchatka Volcanic Arc, has erupted over 68 times in the Holocene, including a catastrophic 1955-56 event. Recent activity spanned March 15, 2022, to August 14, 2024, with several eruptions reaching Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) 3.

The Kamchatka Peninsula, where Bezymianny is located, hosts some of the world’s most active volcanoes. The region is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a tectonically active zone with common subduction-related volcanism.
