Satellite image captures Munich’s snow-covered landscape after historic snowfall

Sentinel-2 satellite captured a stunning view of Munich and its surroundings on December 7, 2023, still blanketed in snow following the city’s heaviest snowfall in 20 years, recorded on December 2.
Munich, Germany, experienced a remarkable weather event on December 2, 2023, when the city woke up to a record-breaking 50 cm (1.6 feet) of snow – the most significant snowfall it had seen in two decades.
The heavy snowfall caused significant disruptions, particularly in air and ground transportation. Munich Airport, Germany’s second-largest airport, reported numerous flight delays and cancellations, and Deutsche Bahn had to cancel long-distance trains and hundreds of flights in and out of Munich. The airport suspended all flights until at least 05:00 UTC on Sunday, December 3, and train services to Munich’s central station were halted for the entire day.
The Sentinel-2 satellite image, taken five days after the snowfall, offers a unique perspective on the extent of this winter event. The city is situated approximately 50 km (30 miles) north of the Alps’ edge.
