Violent M7.7 earthquake hits Sagaing, Myanmar, leaving over 4 400 fatalities, 5 400 injured and many missing
A powerful earthquake registered by the USGS as M7.7 hit Myanmar at 06:20 UTC (12:50 LT) on March 28, 2025. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth, while the Thai Meteorological Department put the magnitude at 8.2. The quake was followed by a strong aftershock measuring M6.7 just 12 minutes later.

The epicenter was located 16 km (10 miles) NNW of Sagaing (population 78 739), 17 km (11 miles) WNW of Mandalay (population 1 208 099), and 55 km (34 miles) W of Pyon Oo Lwin (population 117 303), Myanmar.
2 681 000 people are estimated to have felt violent shaking, 4 568 000 severe, 3 307 000 very strong and 13 716 000 strong.
The USGS issued a Red alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. High casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread. Past red alerts have required a national or international response.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though resistant structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are informal (metal, timber, GI etc.) and unreinforced brick masonry construction.
Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards, such as landslides, that might have contributed to losses.
Estimated economic losses may exceed the GDP of Burma.
Liquefaction triggered by this earthquake is estimated to be extensive in severity and (or) spatial extent. The number of people living near areas that could have produced liquefaction in this earthquake is extensive.
Landslides triggered by this earthquake are estimated to be significant in number and (or) spatial extent.
This is the second M6+ earthquake of the day, following M6.1 near Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago at 00:34 UTC.
This is also the strongest earthquake so far this year, followed by M7.6 in Cayman Island on February 9 and M7.1 in Western Xizang, China on January 7.

The quake caused significant damage, including collapsed buildings in Mandalay and road buckling in Naypyidaw, and was felt in Thailand and China, affecting millions and displacing many in an already vulnerable region.
Over 1 000 people were killed and more than 2 400 injured, according to reports received on March 29, with casualty numbers expected to rise as reports from rural areas continue to emerge.
National phone and internet infrastructure suffered extensive disruption, hampering rescue and communication efforts. The National Unity Government of Myanmar reported the destruction or severe damage of at least 2 970 residential buildings, 150 religious structures, 30 roads, and 7 bridges.
The Islamic community estimated nearly 300 deaths occurred during prayer time as over 50 mosques collapsed across the country.
Mandalay was among the hardest-hit areas, with at least 674 confirmed deaths, 1 670 injuries, and over 1 000 people reported missing. More than half of the city’s buildings were believed to be severely damaged or destroyed.
Notable incidents here included the collapse of Mandalay University buildings, fires on campus, and the failure of the Dokhtawaddy Bridge along the Yangon–Mandalay Expressway, where some vehicles reportedly plunged into the river. Over 30 mosques were destroyed in the region, many of them historic, with heavy casualties reported.
A monastery collapse left over 600 monks trapped, of which 80 were confirmed dead. Several buildings in Maha Aungmye and Pyigyidagun townships collapsed, trapping dozens. The Mandalay Palace, Mahamuni Pagoda, and a local dam also sustained serious damage, while parts of the Mandalay-Yangon highway buckled. Additional fatalities were reported in Yamethin, Kyaukse, Pyawbwe, Meiktila, and Bone Oe, with 36 deaths in Wundwin and destruction reported in Madaya Township.
Sagaing Township experienced widespread structural failure, with nearly 50 deaths, 300 injuries, and damage to around 80 percent of all buildings. The Ava Bridge partially collapsed, and four out of five mosques in Sagaing City were destroyed. Historic temples in Chaung-U Township, in the resistance-held southwest of the region, were also damaged.
In Naypyidaw, the capital, 204 fatalities were confirmed, including many civil servants killed when their residential buildings collapsed. The air traffic control tower at Naypyidaw International Airport collapsed, killing six people. The city experienced road damage, ceiling collapses, and structural failure in several government buildings, including the military headquarters and parliament facilities. The permanent secretary of the labor ministry and several senior foreign officials were among the casualties. The Defence Services Museum and the National Museum sustained significant damage. In Pyinmana, 86 bodies were recovered from the ruins of monasteries and residential structures.
In Shan State, at least 60 deaths were reported in Nyaungshwe Township, particularly in villages near Inle Lake. The village of Kayla, with over 1 000 households, saw 75 percent of its buildings destroyed. Significant damage was also reported in Zarat Gyi and Seong Wa Gyi. Many deaths were attributed to structural collapses or electrocution. In Aungban, a hotel collapse resulted in two deaths and 20 people trapped, while 16 others were injured. During the earthquake, jet fighters en route to a bombing campaign dropped ordnance on Nawnghkio Township, exacerbating the destruction.
In Bago Region, Taungoo Township reported the deaths of five children in a collapsed school and 14 fatalities in a mosque. A shelter used by displaced persons collapsed, trapping more than 20 people. In Pyu, a family of four died when their home’s wall collapsed.
In Yangon, the damage was relatively limited. Some buildings tilted, and there were temporary disruptions to phone lines, but no major casualties were reported. Overall, the full scale of the disaster remains unclear, particularly in rural areas where access remains limited.
In Thailand, at least 10 people were killed, 68 were injured, and 90 were reported missing.
In Bangkok, building swaying led to mass evacuations. All rapid transit lines were suspended for a day, and trading on the Stock Exchange of Thailand was halted. Shaking was also felt in Chiang Mai and across most of the country.
In Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, a 30-storey government office building under construction collapsed, killing at least 8 people and trapping 79 people under rubble. Another collapse occurred at a luxury condominium construction site where a skybridge fell while hundreds of workers were inside the buildings. The full extent of casualties at that site remains unclear.
The reason why Thailand was affected so much lies in its soft marine clay top layer amplifying long-period ground motion, which can match the resonant frequency of tall buildings.
Updates
09:33 UTC, March 31
The death toll has jumped to more than 2 900 in Myanmar and to 18 in Thailand. More than 3 400 people were injured, and there are hundreds more missing.
Authorities in both countries have declared a state of emergency, and the death toll is still expected to rise.
This was the strongest quake to strike Myanmar since the 1912 M7.9 Maymyo earthquake and the deadliest since 1930 M7.4 Bago earthquake, in which up to 7 000 people were killed.
On April 2, 1762, an M8.5-8.8 earthquake hit along the coast of Chittagong to Arakan, triggering a local tsunami that left at least 200 people dead.

BUTTERWORTH, March 28 — Residents in several areas in Penang today also felt tremors due to a strong 7.7 magnitude earthquake that shook an area 16 kilometres northwest Sagaing, Myanmar.
The tremors were felt by office workers and college students in high-rise buildings including in Komtar and George Town as well as residents living in apartment areas around Butterworth here.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Mohamad Shoki Hamzah said his department received two calls to the Butterworth Fire and Rescue Station and the Lebuh Pantai BBP in George Town regarding the tremors.
He said that following the calls, firemen and fire engines rushed to monitor a private college in the Lebuh Pantai and a residential building in Butterworth.
“The fire department received the call around 2.44 and 3 pm this afternoon, so far everyone is safe and no untoward incident has occurred.
“The results of the monitoring conducted by the operation commander found that there were no casualties or damage to buildings. “There was only a small tremor in the building,” he said when contacted by Bernama today
Earlier, a strong earthquake measuring 7.7 magnitude shook an area 16 kilometres northwest Sagaing, Myanmar, at 06.20.54 GMT on Friday.
The epicentre of the earthquake was located at 22.01 degrees north latitude and 95.92 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometres.
Meanwhile, a resident of Butterworth Ling Cheah, 32, said she was washing dishes when she felt a strong tremor in her apartment before pulling her sister out of the house to save themselves.
Ling said it was the first time she felt the tremor, which lasted more than a minute, and as soon as she went down to the compound below the house, she found that many other residents had also come down because they also felt the tremor.
“I was washing dishes and suddenly felt the tremor, at that time I felt dizzy “My head was shaking but I kept dragging my sister down because I was worried about our safety. This is the first time I felt the tremor. I was really scared and shocked,” she said when contacted.
A worker at Komtar, Nur Aishah Ridzuan, 24, said she and her friends were working before they felt the tremor and they decided to leave the building because they were worried about their safety.
“We kept going down because we were worried something might happen and I understand someone called the fire department. Thank God everyone is safe,” she said, who also felt dizzy from the tremor.
The tremor was also felt by Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, who initially thought he was feeling dizzy due to high blood pressure from heavy workload lately.
“When the tremor hit, it was around 2.30 pm. I was in the office at Komtar and felt a little dizzy. I thought my high blood pressure is acting because I am too busy. However I then realised it was a tremor after receiving information that there was an earthquake in Myanmar.
“The tremor was felt several times and each time it happened for a few seconds, my staff also noticed the tremor and so far, no items in the office were damaged,” he said. — Bernama

So I found it interesting to hear no mention of potential Tsunami. Does that only happen if the quake is in the coastal region? Needless to say, very sad indeed.

— Myanmar: Earthquake causes extensive damage in Naypyitaw —
Myanmar has been hit by a massive earthquake on Friday, with huge tremors felt in cities across South East Asia. The earthquake was initially measured at magnitude 7.7 before being upgraded to 8.2, with the epicentre being the city of Mandalay.
While the tremor originated in Myanmar, where authorities have said as many as 10,000 are feared dead so far, it deeply affected also neighbouring countries, including Thailand and Vietnam.
In Vietnam’s Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, lights were swaying from the shaking. In Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, a skyscraper and other buildings collapsed, killing several people and trapping around 80 workers under the debris. In another video shared online, water is seen pouring down from the rooftop swimming pool of another 30-storey tower block and into the street below.
While it is too early for a death toll to be confirmed, the head of Myanmar’s military government said at least 144 people were killed in the earthquake and more than 730 were left injured.
Communications across Myanmar were made difficult during the morning due to a country-wide power outage. A local living in Yangon, some 289 miles from the tremor’s epicentre, told the BBC photos and videos coming from Mandalay paint “a very grim picture of what’s to come”.
They added: “There’s a lot of bad news that will come out of Mandalay once the telecoms are back up and running.”

“Have you not felt these pangs, O earth?! Have you not recoiled in pain, O heavens?! Has not fear grabbed hold of you, O mighty nations?! Blind and hard peoples, REPENT! For My face is turned against you, My shoulders are set, and My hand is ready to strike!
Behold, I shall strike the waters, and they shall rise up against you; from bitterness to the raging of the seas, the waters shall oppress you! I shall strike the mountains, and they shall speak and bring forth a great noise; they shall consume you and bury your cities! I shall strike the heavens, and it shall rain down fire and flooding rain, with a great multitude of hail! Lo, I shall strike the foundations of the earth, and the whole world shall be shaken! Says The Lord.
FOR I AM THE LORD WHO REIGNS! He who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth! YAHUWAH, He who formed it and causes to be! For the whole world is but a footstool beneath My feet, a rock in My hand made of limestone, easily broken… Says The Lord.”

March 28 (UPI) — At least one person was killed after a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday causing widespread damage across the region reaching into neighboring Thailand and southwestern China.
The BBC reported emergency workers searching for victims among destroyed buildings in the central city of Mandalay, close to the epicenter, believed the death toll would be in the hundreds at the least.
The main tremor, which occurred at around 12:20 local time, struck close to the Irrawaddy River in Sagaing Region, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, just west of Mandalay, a city of more than 1.7 million, followed 11 minutes later by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock 20 miles away to the south in Mandalay Region.
Two further 4.6 shocks were recorded minutes apart an hour later. All the quakes were along the Sagaing Fault, a major 750-mile north-south fault that runs virtually the entire length of Myanmar.
The country’s military government declared an “emergency situation” covering large areas of central Myanmar including Mandalay and Naypyidaw, the city the junta re-designated as the capital to replace the British colonial-era capital, Yangon.
The state of emergency was also in place in the Sagaing, Bago and Magway regions and eastern Shan state, scene of fierce fighting between ethnic Shan rebels and the junta after it ignited a civil war in 2021 by overthrowing the country’s democratically elected National Unity Government in a military coup.
The BBC reported roads buckled in Naypyidaw, and footage circulating online showed chaotic scenes at Mandalay Airport while authorities in Bangkok declared the Thai capital a disaster zone after a 30-story building under construction collapsed killing at least one person and trapping scores of workers.
The office of Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said in a post on X that airports, hospitals, and transport had been placed on standby and security forces mobilized with police officers evacuating people from unsafe buildings, aiding victims, and managing traffic.
“Citizens are urged to avoid high-rises,” the office said.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt ordered the immediate establishment of an earthquake response command center.
The quake also rocked China’s Yunan Province with the China Geological Survey, the country’s counterpart to the USGS in Beijing, saying the main shock registered at a higher magnitude of 7.9, according to its instruments.
The quake in Myanmar comes at a time when the country is very poorly placed to deal with a disaster, mired as it already is mired in deep crisis due to ongoing civil war that has forced huge numbers of people to flee their homes and left more than three million people in dire need of humanitarian assistance, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
The agency said in an update issued Friday that the number of people in need would rise to just short of 20 million in 2025, out of a population of 57 million, due to worsening humanitarian conditions amid an escalation in the fighting, particularly in the northwest of the country, and increasing repression by the military government.
OCHA warned that with its 2025 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan to help 5.5 million people just 4.9% funded, humanitarian organizations were struggling to continue to deliver lifesaving assistance.
It said increased funding and sustained access were urgently needed to reach those most in need.
