Six people lost their lives on Sunday, June 1, when a mudslide caused by heavy rainfall swept a truck off the road in the Ayacucho region of southern Peru. The mudslide struck around 05:30 local time (10:30 UTC), sweeping the vehicle off the road as it was traveling between the districts of Anco and Llochegua.

The government authorities have retrieved the bodies of all six victims. A surge of mud and water pushed the truck into a ravine over 100 m (328 feet) deep, where it became trapped under debris, complicating the rescue operation.

Teams from the Regional Health Directorate (DIRESA) arrived at the site to assist in the rescue and provide medical care to those impacted by the incident.

A similar incident was narrowly avoided on the same route when another truck was caught in the mud, but all passengers managed to get out safely.
