A landfall caused by heavy rainfall on June 1 has claimed the lives of three Indian soldiers, with six others still missing in Chhaten, Sikkim. Torrential rainfall has inundated other northeastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura as well, and resulted in heavy flooding, landslides, and road damage in the region.
Bodies of the deceased personnel have been found, and four other soldiers were safely rescued with minor injuries. The search and rescue operation for the six missing is underway despite the prevailing harsh weather conditions.
Non-stop rain in Sikkim has disrupted travel and cut off access to areas, leaving somewhere between 1 000 – 1 500 tourists stuck. A joint rescue operation involving local authorities, forest teams, hotel staff, and residents is working to move people to safety.
Over the past four days, severe flooding and landslides in northeast India have claimed the lives of at least 34 people.
