Two heat-related deaths were reported in Texas and Missouri between June 21 and 23, 2025, as a prolonged and intense heat wave driven by a persistent heat dome engulfed large parts of the central and eastern United States. Extreme heat will linger in the Ohio Valley through Friday, then we will finally see some relief from the heat this weekend.

A prolonged and intense heat wave that impacted much of the central and eastern United States from June 21 onwards, with temperatures soaring above 38°C (100°F) across numerous metropolitan areas, has resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals.

A 51-year-old postal worker in Dallas, Texas, collapsed and died on Saturday, June 21, while he was delivering mail. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, and the official cause of death remains under investigation by the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office. The temperature in Dallas on June 21 was 34.4°C (94°F), and the day before that the mercury soared to 35°C (95°F).

In Missouri, a 55-year-old woman was found dead in her apartment in St. Ann, near St. Louis, on June 23. Authorities reported the apartment lacked functioning air conditioning and had no electricity. The exact cause of death is still pending autopsy results from St. Louis County officials. Temperature in St. Louis on June 22 and 23 was 35.5 °C (96°F).

Cities such as Boston, Newark, and Philadelphia reported all-time or near-record high temperatures, with readings between 38°C and 40°C (100°F to 104°F).

With around 245 million people feeling temperatures of 32°C (90°F) or higher and 33 million dealing with readings above 38°C (100°F), the National Weather Service (NWS) had put several states under heat advisories and excessive heat warnings. Most of the U.S. is likely to see a break from the intense heat starting on Friday, June 27.
