Starship explodes in spectacular fireball, causing air traffic delays

The uncrewed SpaceX Starship exploded mid-flight on Thursday, March 6, 2025, after lifting off from the company’s Starbase facility in South Texas at 17:30 CST (23:30 UTC). The Super Heavy booster successfully executed a return and mid-air catch, but the Starship upper stage was lost in a spectacular explosion, causing temporary air traffic disruptions.

“During Starship’s ascent burn, the vehicle experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly, and contact was lost. Our team immediately coordinated with safety officials to implement pre-planned contingency responses,” SpaceX stated.

According to the company, an “energetic event”—an explosion—in the aft section of Starship caused multiple engine failures, leading to a spin and eventual loss of communication approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds after liftoff.

The loss of signal occurred at a similar point as during Flight 7, when Starship exploded over the Turks and Caicos Islands, scattering debris and damaging a vehicle.

Videos posted on social media captured fiery streaks lighting up the night sky over the Caribbean and Bahamas, with some users describing it as “a meteor shower meets fireworks.”

The explosion prompted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to issue temporary ground stops at several Florida airports—including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and Orlando—due to reports of “space launch debris.” The disruptions lasted until approximately 20:00 EST (19:00 CST).

No injuries or property damage were reported, though the FAA and SpaceX have launched a joint investigation to determine the explosion’s cause and assess any risks to public safety.

The launch, designated as Starship Flight 8, was the latest in a series of test flights aimed at refining the world’s most powerful rocket system, designed to carry crew and cargo to the Moon and Mars.

“With a test like this, success comes from what we learn, and today’s flight will help us improve Starship’s reliability,” SpaceX said. “We will conduct a thorough investigation, in coordination with the FAA, and implement corrective actions to make improvements on future Starship flight tests.”

The FAA’s investigation will likely focus on the explosion’s cause—early speculation points to harmonic vibrations or propellant line issues, based on prior test data—and whether it poses risks to populated areas near Starbase.
