Iliamna Volcano has shown a rise in seismic activity, with a series of small earthquakes beginning around 12:30 UTC (04:30 local time) on June 15. The tremors began with a rapid sequence of earthquakes occurring several times a minute, but that pace has since dropped to about one per minute. There’s no clear indication that this activity is tied to volcanic unrest.
This pattern of seismic activity is similar to what has been recorded before major ice and rock avalanches at the volcano, though it’s still unclear what this current activity will lead to. These types of avalanches at Iliamna have often taken place around this season.
A similar sequence of events occurred at the same location on June 5, 2023, and led to an ice-rock avalanche. Although there were no direct visual observations, the seismic signals were consistent with those previously linked to avalanches on the eastern flank’s Red Glacier. Following this activity, the Volcano Alert Level was elevated to Advisory at the time.
Iliamna is a glacier-covered stratovolcano in Lake Clark National Park and has seen only a few major explosive eruptions during the Holocene. The volcano is heavily eroded and lacks a clearly defined crater. Its last documented eruption was in 1876.
