Record-breaking heatwave continues across Northeast U.S.

A heat dome settled over the United States beginning June 23, 2025, driving record-breaking temperatures across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. More than 245 million people experienced daytime highs above 32 °C (90 °F), with 33 million facing extreme heat above 38 °C (100 °F) by June 24. Cities like New York and Philadelphia saw historic highs and record-warm nights, leading to heat advisories and health warnings across 2/3rd of the US states.

Silchar records over 400 mm (16 inches) of rainfall in 24 hours, breaks 132-year record

Intense rainfall in northeast India on June 1, 2025, caused widespread flooding and landslides, resulting in at least 36 fatalities and the displacement of thousands. In Silchar, Assam, a 24-hour rainfall total reached 415.8 mm (16.37 inches), marking the city’s heaviest downpour in over a century. Rivers in Assam flowed above the danger mark, making it one of the hardest-hit areas.

Iceland’s historic May heatwave sets new temperature records

A record-breaking heatwave affected Iceland from May 6 to 15, 2025, with temperatures reaching 26.6°C (79.9°F) at Egilsstaðir Airport and setting a new national May temperature record. The 10-day event was described by the Icelandic Meteorological Office as the most significant May heatwave in the country’s meteorological history.

Havana sets new May temperature record at 38°C (100.4°F)

Havana’s Casablanca weather station recorded 38°C (100.4°F) on May 20, 2025, setting a new May temperature record. This surpassed the previous high of 37.3°C (99.1°F) recorded on May 19, 2024, according to Cuba’s Institute of Meteorology (INSMET).
