Severe weather conditions, which began affecting parts of northern Italy on Saturday, June 14, continued through Monday, causing widespread damage in the affected regions. The hardest-hit areas were Modena, Bologna, Reggio Emilia, and Ravenna.

Large hailstones were reported in Faenza and Lower Romagna, while a tornado swept through Salvaterra in Reggio Emilia. However, no damage was reported from the twister.

Violent thunderstorms with wind gusts up to 100 km/h (62 mph) affected the province of Bologna, triggering floods, particularly in Sasso Marconi, and raising the risk of landslides in the Ganzole area. By evening, the storm system moved into Romagna, impacting areas between Ravenna and Rimini.

A massive landslide struck Borca di Cadore, burying homes and vehicles under mud and debris, prompting fire authorities to deploy excavators.

Rainfall reached record levels in the Modena area, with accumulations exceeding 30 mm (1 inch) in one hour in the territories of the Ceramic District Union and the Union of the Lands of Castles on Monday.

In some areas, totals reached 70 mm (3 inches) in just three hours. Overall, rainfall across the hilly and foothill regions ranged between 40 and 80 mm (2 to 3 inches).

Floodwaters reportedly entered health care facilities in Modena, particularly affecting the central parts of the region. The most affected locations were Vignola, Sassuolo, Formigine, Modena, and Castelfranco.

In Vignola, flooding affected a dialysis unit, requiring a safety intervention that allowed patients to continue their treatments. Floodwaters also entered the emergency department in the facility.

A hailstorm accompanied by strong winds struck the province of Ravenna, damaging orchards in the high hill areas of the Senio Valley, between Riolo Terme, Mazzolano, and Toranello.

Crops were also damaged in lower-elevation areas of Castel Bolognese and some inland parts of the Faenza region. Damage has also been reported to cereal crops, along with fallen trees along Via Brisighellese and between Faenza and Russi.

During the peak of the storm, landings at Marconi Airport were suspended for safety reasons. Flights scheduled to arrive in Bologna were rerouted to Bergamo, Venice, Malpensa, and Pisa. Meanwhile, an Emirates flight was diverted to Rome Fiumicino.
