The epicenter was located 24 km (15 miles) WSW of Callao (population 1.3 million) and 29 km (46 miles) SW of Lima (population 7.7 million).
This region lies within the central Peruvian coastal zone, where urban density and infrastructure are among the highest in the country. Both the Jorge Chávez International Airport and Peru’s principal seaport are located within the affected area.
There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
IGP received numerous felt reports from Lima, Callao, and surrounding districts, consistent with moderate to strong ground shaking across the metropolitan area.
Unfortunately, at least one person has been killed after a wall collapsed in Lima’s Independencia district.
In addition to the reported fatality, local media and authorities noted minor landslides and rockfalls along the Costa Verde coastal highway in Miraflores, with several incidents of falling debris blocking road sections.
Structural damage was reported in parts of Lima, including the partial collapse of a dining area roof at Plaza Norte mall. Public transport services, including portions of the Lima Metro Line 1, were temporarily suspended for safety inspections.

According to the USGS PAGER, 11 006 000 people are estimated to have felt light shaking. The agency issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are highly vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though some resistant structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are mud wall and reinforced/confined masonry construction.
Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that might have contributed to losses.

Peru is situated along the boundary between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates, one of the world’s most active seismic zones. Earthquakes of this magnitude are capable of causing localized landslides and structural damage, especially in poorly consolidated slopes and older buildings.

“Thus says The Lord God: The earth is filled with violence, the whole world is corrupt! Madness has overcome the people, transgression is uplifted, and abominations of every kind are widely accepted; great wickedness proliferates throughout every tribe, tongue, people and nation unimpeded! Thus the earth is forsaken for a time, wherein I have turned to it My back. And so shall it remain, until the Great Day comes when I shall move swiftly against it…
And until this time and after, the earth shall tremble and shake, and bring forth calamity upon calamity, and famine and pestilence of every kind. For all this is but the beginning of sorrows, the first contractions of an expectant mother suffering to bring forth… Says The Lord.”
