Strong M6.1 earthquake hits near the coast of Philippines

A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.1 hit near the coast of the Philippines at 23:07 UTC on June 27, 2025. The agency is reporting a depth of 101 km (63 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth. PHIVOLCS is reporting M6.1 at a depth of 85 km (53 miles).

The epicenter was located 72 km (44 miles) ESE of Sarangani (population 7 596), 87 km (54 miles) SE of Caburan (population 12 618), and 116 km (72 miles) ESE of Glan (population 24 256), Philippines.

1 261 000 people are estimated to have felt light shaking.

PHIVOLCS reported that the earthquake was tectonic in origin. No damage is expected, but aftershocks remain possible.

The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are a mix of vulnerable and earthquake-resistant construction. The predominant vulnerable building types are unknown/miscellaneous types and heavy wood frame construction.

Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that might have contributed to losses.
