Strong and shallow M6.6 earthquake hits Scotia Sea
A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as an M6.6 struck the Scotia Sea at 08:32 UTC on June 28, 2025. The agency reports a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.

The epicenter was located roughly 300 km (187 miles) east of the Base Orcadas, an Argentinian scientific station in Antarctica, and 710 km (441 miles) south of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
Based on earthquake information and historic tsunami records, the earthquake is not expected to generate a tsunami, the NWS National Tsunami Warning Center said.
The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
There are likely to be no affected structures in this region.
